Librarians involved with judging the NZ Book Awards for Children & Young Adults

24/6/2019

LIANZA have been rewarding excellence in New Zealand children’s literature since 1945, with the establishment of the Esther Glen Award for Fiction. LIANZA added other awards over the years including the Russell Clark Award for Illustration in 1975, and the Elsie Locke Non-fiction Award in 1986. The Te Kura Pounamu Award for literature written in Te Reo Māori was established in 1996, in partnership with Te Rōpū Whakahau.

In 2016 the LIANZA Children and Young Adult Book Awards were transferred to the New Zealand Book Awards Trust, and merged with the Zealand Book Awards for Children and Young Adults. This has enabled the 60 year legacy of the LIANZA book awards to be strengthened.

The Te Kura Pounamu Award is judged by LIANZA’s partner Te Rōpū Whakahau. The strong influence of libraries and librarians continues to this day through the partnership between LIANZA and the NZ Book Awards Trust and strong representation of librarians on the judging panel.

This year’s convenor of judges Crissi Blair has been writing about children’s books and their makers for nearly 20 years, including seven years for the Book Council’s e-news The School Library, reviews and articles for Magpies magazine, where she is now New Zealand Coordinator, and her own publication New Zealand Children’s Books in Print 2005-2013. She was a member of the 2018 judging panel for the New Zealand Book Awards for Children and Young Adults, and has a long involvement with Storylines, including three years as festival manager. Crissi has a Bachelor in Design and Visual Arts, with a specialist interest in picture book illustration, and has recently finished studying for library qualifications while working as a librarian at Rangeview Intermediate School in Auckland.

Other librarians on the judging panel include (clockwise from top left) our very own LIANZA President-elect and Kaiāwhina of Te Rōpū Whakahau, Anahera Morehu; Jacqueline Joyce Snee (Ngāti Porou, Ngāti Kahungunu) Poukōkiri Rangahau Māori, senior librarian Māori Research at Auckland Central Library; Simie Simpson (Te Ati Awa), a librarian in the Kaipara District north of Auckland; and Moana Munro, kaitiakipukapuka Māori for Hastings District Libraries.

Here at the LIANZA Office we feel the awards are in good hands with these knowledgeable librarians!

Last week, in the presence of LIANZA members, National Library Leadership & LIAC members, LIANZA President Paula Eskett & Bill Macnaught, the National Librarian, proudly co-signed our first formal relationship agreement.

Our relationship has grown on a strong foundation built on trust, mutual respect, optimism and possibility. We are so pleased to formalise our relationship with National Library of New Zealand and to maintain our collaborative, forward-thinking approach.

Kia ora koutou
Ko au te Tumuaki o Te Rau Herenga O Aotearoa ara LIANZA
Ko Paula Eskett tōku ingoa

To stand here today a LIANZA President formalising LIANZA’s relationship with National Library of New Zealand Te Puna Mātauranga o Aotearoa is a special day for our organisation, members and for me personally.
The relationship between LIANZA and National Library has evolved, developed and strengthened over many, many years and has grown a strong foundation built on trust, mutual respect, optimism and possibility.

Today we celebrate and socialise formally our shared values which include;
  • Honouring Te Tiriti o Waitangi, committing to relationships that understand the needs and expectations of Maori and continue to progress and improve responsive library services together
  • Strengthening the library and information profession through responsive workforce development and leadership training
  • Supporting training providers to deliver world-class library and information qualifications in an Aotearoa context
  • Individually and collectively working to create sustainable change and improvement in education and literacy outcomes of all young New Zealanders, which creates a nation of readers

Libraries – their services, spaces, people and resources enrich the cultural and economic lives of New Zealander and together we can do more, be more and create more for New Zealanders.

We believe this individually and collectively.

LIANZA and National Library have been working closely for the last three years in pursuit of winning the WLIC for New Zealand and the Pacific.

If ever a partnership needed testing a WLIC bid could be it. We have genuinely proven to each other, our stakeholders, members and communities that in addition to a shared purpose; trust confidence, integrity and open communication are our shared ways of working.

E hara taku toa
I te toa takitahi
Ho toa takitani

My strength I not a an individual, but as a collective
Tenā koutou, tēnā  koutou, tenā koutou katoa.

1Lib1Ref at the Walsh Memorial Library

The Walsh Memorial Library at MOTAT took part in #1Lib1Ref to get some of our great resources backing the information on a few different Wikipedia pages relating to New Zealand’s transport stories.  We cited the time it took Jean Batten to fly from England to New Zealand from the very page she wrote in the aircraft’s logbook, and used our published titles to add citations to Sir Tim Wallis’ incredible aviation story. Wallis promotes tourism in New Zealand and has restored a number of World War II era fighter aircraft as well as being the founder of the New Zealand air show, Warbirds over Wanaka.   Freya, pictured here, cited the Wikipedia page for boy racers.  MOTAT displays the first car that was crushed when vehicle confiscation was introduced for boy racing in New Zealand in 2009. This now brightly painted car can be seen in front of the old Waitākere Railway Station at MOTAT’s Great North Road site. Keep an eye out when you next visit!

With the launch of our new collections online happening in June, we are going to keep building on this momentum as we now have permanent links to work with.  We’re excited to jump on the linked data train and get participating!
