GRANT FUNDING AVAILABLE TO BECOME A LIBRARY
AND INFORMATION PROFESSIONAL

The work library and information professionals do is diverse. If your strengths include being digitally savvy, understanding Te Ao Māori, and or having good research and people skills then this interesting line of mahi (work) may well suit you.

Whether you are already working in a library or information service, or you are entirely new to this area, we want more people working in our libraries and information services who are qualified and who represent the communities we work with all over Aotearoa.

Grants are available for tertiary qualifications in indigenous knowledge management, library and information studies.

ABOUT THE GRANTS

A grant of up to $10,000 pa may be available to help you get your qualification.

This includes qualifications relevant to public, school, tertiary, national and special libraries, and whānau, iwi and marae collections of taonga tuku iho.

Applications are available to people who are:
  • Seeking to undertake library and information qualifications including certificates, diplomas, Bachelor’s degrees, postgraduate certificates, postgraduate diplomas and Masters degrees at either Victoria University of Wellington, Open Polytechnic or Te Wānanga o Raukawa. For more information on these tertiary providers go here.
  • You may be new to or already working in the library and information sector, starting your first library and information qualification, or you may be starting a new higher-level library and information qualification.
  • Grants will provide funding for tertiary fees. Consideration will also be given to funding other costs such as childcare, accommodation, travel, technology, research-related costs etc.

The purpose of the tertiary grants funding is to:

“We are looking forward to seeing applicants from across Aotearoa New Zealand. These tertiary grants are intended to better support and reflect our diverse communities across the country, so I encourage people, especially managers and community leaders, to champion the opportunity provided by these grants. It is a chance for people already working in our sector to get started with a qualification and to reduce some of the financial barriers. It is also an opportunity to encourage people from our communities who we would love to see join our profession, giving them a stepping-stone into the sector through a qualification.”
